The unit motto “Tropic Communicators” inscribed on the 106th Signal Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, is a nod to the Brigade’s location in Panama during the first six years (1991 to 1997) of its reorganization, reactivation, and redesignation with that title. The scrolls on which the motto is written partially encircle a blue disc, an allusion to the globe and recognition of the Brigade’s worldwide mission capabilities.
Superimposed on the blue disc is a sunburst, whose rays spreading out in all directions reflect the far reach the Brigade possesses in mission support. That support is also symbolized by two crossed swords, also a sign of strength, with lightning flashes forming the blades to indicate the speed of modern electronics communications and the invaluable role they play in both military preparedness and mission execution.
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
