4th Battalion, 11th Field Artillery was fist activated in 1959 and allotted to the Army Reserve, originally as a rocket howitzer battalion and then as a 105mm howitzer battalion. In October 1986 it was allotted to the Regular Army and assigned to the 6th Infantry Division in Alaska; it was then reassigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade and transferred to Fort Wainwright upon the inactivation of the 6th Infantry Division in 1998.
Reorganized as a Stryker brigade in 2003, the 172nd deployed to Iraq in August 2005, with the 4th Battalion and assigned to support the Brigade’s combat operations as well as its stability efforts in the Mosul. One of Battery C’s responsibilities during the deployment was the calibration of artillery fires on M198 Medium Towed Howitzers to ensure accurate fire and minimize any collateral damage, particularly civilian casualties.
Returning to Alaska in December 2006, the 172nd Infantry Division, including the 4-11 Battalion, was inactivated, its personnel and equipment used to activate the 1st Brigade Combat Team (Stryker), 25th Infantry Division.
