Approved on 22 October 2010, the 113th Sustainment Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia—sometimes called a unit crest, or DUI for short—is capped by an inscription of the unit motto, “First Line,” in gold letters on a scarlet background; scarlet and gold are the colors of Sustainment units.
Below the motto is a horse rampant (rearing) on a red and white field topped by a blue field, arrayed in a manner that suggest the flag of the unit’s home state of North Carolina; blue, white, and red are the colors of loyalty, purity of purpose, and valor, respectively. The Brigade’s fighting spirit is embodied in the horse rampant (also a reminder of the unit’s nickname “Steel Horses”), and the four stars bookending the horse stand for the three Army branches comprising Sustainment units and the Logistics Corps—Quartermaster, Ordnance, and Transportation—along with the the Warrior Ethos that guides all Soldiers.

The 113th Sustainment Brigade was originally formed in 1974 as the 113th Field Artillery Brigade. The unit was reformed as a Sustaiment Brigade in October 2008, losing the 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment--a unit that had been assigned to the brigade since its formation--in the process. Today, the Brigade is composed of two North Carolina Army National Guard Battalions, the 113th Special Troops Battalion headquartered in Asheboro, NC and the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Brigade headquartered in Lenoir, NC.
