The 15th Sustainment Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (unit patch) was not approved until 13 January 2006, which means it was in effect for active-duty personnel for less than a decade. That’s because the 15th Sustainment Brigade was redesignated the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade in May 2015, and with the new designation its members began wearing the 1st Armored Division unit patch.
It’s a bit sad that the old 15th Sustainment Brigade unit patch will no longer be worn by active-duty Soldiers because it was eye-catching and symbolized the unit’s history quite well. The arches in the middle of the insignia stand for support—but they also are the Roman numeral “X” for 10. Add that to the five “mullets” (read: stars) in the arches, and you get the unit’s old numerical designation. And the stars themselves stand for the five support functions of a Sustainment Brigade—Maintenance, Supply, Transportation, Field Services, and Human Resources—that enabled the Brigade to “Support the Action.” Lastly, the horse’s head is a tribute to the unit’s consolidation with the 1st Cavalry Division Band, formed in 1856 when Cavalry troops were still Horse Soldiers.
