U.S. ARMY 168TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not allow DUIs to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 168th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for 168th Engineer Group on 26 October 1970. In May 2003, it was redesignated for the 168th Engineer Brigade, and the description and symbolism were revised to reflect the unit’s new designation. Featuring a roughly oval shape, the 168th Engineer Brigade unit crest pays tribute to the Brigade’s wartime service, overall mission, and Mississippi heritage. “Monuments to Progress,” the unit motto, encircles the top and bottom of the interior portion of the insignia, which contains the image of a demi-sun behind a stone wall, a saltire, two stars, and an arrowhead. The design of the sun and its rays is inspired by the sun found on the flag of the Republic of the Philippines, where the unit earned a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation; the blue background is an allusion to the Presidential Unit Citation it was awarded for its operations in Mindanao.

The two stars in the middle stand for the unit’s participation in two World War II campaigns, while its part in an amphibious assault landing during the New Guinea action is represented by the arrowhead between the two. The saltire, or “x” shape, is taken from the Mississippi state flag, and the brick wall at the bottom is an emblem of the unit’s building responsibilities; it also is a reference to the defensive fortifications at Vicksburg, where the unit is stationed.
