U.S. ARMY 172ND INFANTRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Approved on 8 June 1966, the 172nd Infantry Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, or DUI reflects the Brigade’s assignment to Fort Richardson in Alaska through a variety of images. In the center is a totem pole featuring an American Eagle perched atop a Russian Bear, a reference to the U.S. purchase of Alaska or to American primacy over the Soviet threat (or both).

Behind the totem pole is a diagonally tilted bayonet, a weapon always associated with Infantry (which is emphasized with blue shading for the bayonet and the four triangles formed by the snowline of the mountain). To the pole’s left is a red mullet, or eight-pointed star—the same number of stars found on the unit patch featuring the Big Dipper and the North Star.

In the background is a majestic, snow-capped peak, symbolizing the Alaskan terrain where the unit trained and worked. Across the base of the crest is the Latin word CAVEAT which translates as “Let Him Beware.”
