U.S. ARMY 181ST INFANTRY BRIGADE PATCH (SSI)

Today’s 181st Infantry Brigade was originally consti-tuted under that same designation back in August 1917, earning three World War I campaign streamers for its service with the 91st Division. By the time it was ordered into active service during World War II—again with the 91st Division, which became the 91st Infantry Division in February 1942—it had been redesignated the 91st Reconnaissance Group; it would become the 91st Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized before taking part in the first of three World War II campaigns for which it also earned streamers.

Following a three-year activation (1956 – 1959) as the 91st Reconnaissance Company, the unit was disbanded, only to be reconstituted in March1963 as HHC, 2nd Brigade, 63rd Infantry Division and activated on April 1. Less than two years later, on 31 December 1965, the unit was inactivated again; it would not be activated until 2006, when it was redesignated as HHC, 181st Infantry Brigade and assigned as subordinate unit in United States First Army Division West. Its mission is to train Reserve and National Guard units as part of the ultimate goal as stated in the unit motto "DOCERE BELLUM ET PAX PACIS"—Latin for "To Win War And Peace."

Although the 181st Infantry Brigade Shoulder Sleeve was approved on 14 August 2007, the personnel of the 181st Infantry Brigade instead wear the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of First Army because of the Brigade’s status as a subordinate unit. The full-color version, however, could be used as the basis for the Brigade’s Combat Service ID Badge, and the subdued unit patches could be authorized for wear should the Brigade be reassigned.
