The 1889th Regional Support Group (RSG) is a brigade-level headquarters in Montana Army National Guard, with four subordinate battalions comprising roughly 2,200 under its command. One of the newest National Guard units in the country, the establishment of the 1889th RSG was first announced on 24 September 2010 as a way to centralize command functions for the various unit spread throughout the state. It has been called into active Federal military service on several occasions since its establishment, most recently in the Autumn of 2023 when it was deployed overseas to provide base operations and administration in support of operations in Southwest Asia for approximately one year.
Celebrating the state of Montana’s heritage is the focal point of the 1889th Regional Support Group Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, also called a unit patch. An arrowhead and buffalo immediately conjure Montana’s Native American heritage; surrounding them are a buff border and a scarlet interior. The two white swords of Montana icon Thomas Meagher raise the nation's colors, scarlet and blue, alluding to his famous rally cry: “Be it for the defense, or be it for the assertion of a nation’s liberty, I look upon the sword as a sacred weapon.” The embroidery of the interior is inverted to make the Arrowhead appear smoother and sharper.
The 1889th Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of he 1889th Regional Support Group was approved on 24 February 2012.
