U.S. ARMY SPECIAL TROOPS BATTALION, 2ND BCT, 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Special Troops Battalion (STB), 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was formed in November 2005 at the same time the Division’s 2nd Brigade became a Brigade Combat Team by splitting the Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company; the ’s HQ Company was reorganized and redesignated as the STB of the 2nd BCT, while the HQ alone became Headquarters of the 2nd BCT. Subordinate units of the Special Troops Battalion included Anti-Tank, Engineer, Signal, and Military Intelligence Companies.

This configuration was relatively short-lived, with both the Special Troops Battalion and the 2nd BCT Headquarters being inactivated on 15 March 2008. Over two years later, however, the BCT’s Headquarters were activated at Fort Lewis, Washington, and the Special Troops Battalion was redesignated as the Headquarters Company for the BCT and activated at the same time.

During its short period of activation, the HHC, Special Troops Battalion and three of its Companies were a Meritorious Unit Citation for the support it provided strike-force teams as they conducted combat and security operations, living up to the unit motto of being “Forged Under Fire" found on the unit crest of the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd BCT, 2nd Infantry Division.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
