The U.S. Army Center of Military History has no record regarding the constitution and organization of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. The battalion appears to have been established by the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Future Force Integration Directorate as the Army Evaluation Task Force.
In addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the 5th BCT comprised two Combined Arms Battalions, a Fires Battalion, and a Brigade Support Battalion. This was a modification of the proposed Future Force Unit of Action, which was designed to include three Combined Arms Battalions, a battalion of non-line-of-sight cannon, a forward support battalion, and a reconnaissance and target acquisition squad.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 5th BCT, 1st Armored features a star (presumably representing Texas, home of Fort Bliss) and an Arrowhead. A bayonet superimposed over a countercharged square, which is itself superimposed of a countercharged shield, represents the combat role of the unit and its integration of armor and infantry. “With Our Shields” was the motto of the unit, which was inactivated along with the rest of the 5th BCT in 2010.
On 19 September 2013, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 2nd Combined Arms Batallion, 1st Artillery Division—along with the five companies (A-E) that made up the battalion—was recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award in DAGO 2013-44.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
