Often referred to as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 20th Support Command (CBRNE) features a flaming sword, similar to the one seen in the 20th Support Command’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia / Combat Service ID Badge (SSI / CSIB). The sword is a symbol of our country’s unrelenting fight against domestic and international terrorism, as well as the unit’s commitment to its motto of Libertatem Defendimus—Latin for “Liberty We Defend.”
Five stars represent the five threats the unit must deal with: Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and High-Yield Explosive. A fleur-de-lis at the top of the crest is a small reminder that the scourge of chemical weapons first emerged on the World War I battlefields of Europe.
This Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 20th Support Command on 5 April 2005. On 6 May 2005, the description was revised and the symbolism was amended before it was subsequently given its current designation with an effective date of 17 October 2013.
Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
