Since its December 1941 creation as Company A, 640th Tank Destroyer Battalion, the 224th Sustainment Brigade has constantly lived up to its unit motto of SERVIENS SEMPER, Latin for “Always Serving” or “Service Always.” During World War II, the Korean War, the War on Terrorism, and overseas operations in Bosnia and Kosovo, the unit has always answered the call to Federal service with enthusiasm and dedication, earning prestigious awards such as the Presidential Unit Citation and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation (World War II), the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and Meritorious Unit Commendation (Operation Iraqi Freedom).
As of Autumn 2023, the 224th Sustainment Brigade is an active unit in the California Army National Guard. It is headquartered at Long Beach, California and controls the 749th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

Approved on 31 July 2008, the 224th Sustainment Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, celebrates some of the unit’s more notable achievements. The dark blue of the scroll and sword guard sand for the Pacific Ocean and the three World War II campaigns in which the unit participated; the sea serpent is also a Pacific WWII reference and recalls the World War II decorations mentioned above. An unsheathed, upright sword indicates military preparedness and the unit’s readiness to defend the United States and her allies. Above the serpent, a stylized corona alludes to the “Sunshine State” of California and the units protection of Los Angeles citizens during periods of violent unrest.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. I
t is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
