U.S. ARMY 228TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 228th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 228th Supply and Transport Battalion on 5 April 1968. It was subsequently redesignated with a revised description and symbolism for the 228th Support Battalion, Pennsylvania Army National Guard on 27 March 1992, a unit that also served as the 228th Brigade Support Battalion before its reorganization and redesignation as the 55th Support Battalion in September 2016.

A brick-red scroll with the unit motto “Where Others Lead Off” in gold script indicates the organization is or was involved in Supply and Transport—gold and brick red are the colors long associated with units performing those functions. The gold structure is a torii gate that commemorates the organization’s service in Korea (see below) and the Meritorious Unit Commendation it was awarded for its outstanding performance. In the doorway of the torii gate is an althea blossom taken from the flag of the President of Korea and used here to symbolize two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations the Battalion was awarded. It rests upon an eight-pointed mullet that recalls the eight campaigns the unit fought in during the Korean War.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 228th Support Battalion served in Korea while designated Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 167th Truck Battalion. In April 1954, it was reorganized as HHC, 167th Transportation Battalion and then had Federal recognition withdrawn on 31 October 1955. It was reconstituted, reorganized, and Federally recognized in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard on 31 January 1956 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 167th Transportation Battalion, and then in June 1959 it was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 167th Transportation Battalion.

Beginning in April 1963, the unit spent nearly thirty years designated as HHC, 228th Supply and Transport Battalion before it finally was given the 228th Support Battalion designation on 1 March 1992. In January 2005, it was ordered into active Federal service until 1 October 2006. For its service in Anbar Province between 28 February and 16 June 2006, it was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation in May 2014, sixteen months before it was reorganized and redesignated as the 55th Support Battalion.
