More commonly referred to as a DUI or a "unit crest," the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 230th Aviation Regiment was originally approved for the 775th Tank Destroyer Battalion on 19 October 1942. Since that time, it was amended once (to change the symbolism) and redesignated four times: for the 765th Tank Battalion on 15 July 1947, for the 230th Reconnaissance Battalion on 8 July 1955, for the 230th Cavalry Regiment on 21 January 1966, and lastly for its currently assigned unit, the 230th Aviation Regiment, on 1 October 2015.
Associated with authority, valor, and ferociousness, a lion holding in its mouth a severed right hand—the hand with which an enemy would wield a weapon, or “sword hand”—alludes to the destruction of foes and ultimate triumph over all obstacles and opponents. The lion is rendered in yellow (gold) to reflect the unit’s past service as a Tank/Tank Destroyer and Cavalry organization; it is set upon a field of red for combat power and martial strength, qualities reinforce by the motto “Speed, Strength, Stamina.”
The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
As of May 2023, the 230th Aviation Regiment is a unit in the Tennessee Army National Guard consisting of a single Battalion, the 1st. It is headquartered at Smyrna, Tennessee and is designated as an Assault Helicopter Regiment; its C Company is assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Whie the organization has yet to earn a military decoration while designated as an Aviation unit, it is credited with the Meritorious Unit Commendation awarded to its predecessor, the 230th Cavalry Regiment, for its support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The MUC was awarded in June 2010 to the Regiment’s HQ and HQ Troop and seven of its component Troops (A through G, though Troop G was Provisional at the time).
