U.S. ARMY 26TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 26th Brigade Support Battalion was originally constituted in the Regular Army as 1st Battalion, 26th Quartermaster Regiment on 1 May 1936. Following U.S. entry into World War II, it became the 1st Battalion, 26th Quartermaster Truck Regiment, and it participated in five campaigns, four in Europe and on in the Pacific (its Asiatic-Pacific streamer is uninscribed). It was inactivated in April 1946.

Over the next several decades, the Battalion would undergo a string of activations/inactivations and redesignations. On 1 May 1986 it was redesignated as the 26th Forward Support Battalion in Germany and assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. It was with this unit that the Battalion earned credit for all three campaigns of the Southwest Asia conflict (First Gulf War). In January 2005, the Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 26th Brigade Support Battalion and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It would make another deployment again in mid-2007 as a member of the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. On 15 January 2015, the Battalion was inactivated.

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 26th Brigade Support Battalion was originally approved for the 26th Quartermaster Regiment on 3 February 1943. It was subsequently redesignated for the 26th Quartermaster Battalion (June 1944) and the 26th Transportation Battalion (June 1954) before it was given its final designation for the 26th Support Battalion, with its description and symbolism amended, on 14 September 1987. “Victory Through Mobility,” the Battalion motto, emphasized the importance of the Battalion personnel’s contributions to mission success.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
