More commonly referred to as a DUI or a “unit crest,” the Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a DUI or a unit crest) of the 298th Regiment was originally approved for the 298th Infantry Regiment on 5 May 1936. It was subsequently redesignated twice before being given its current designation in March 1997, first for the 227th Engineer Battalion (25 October 1957) and then for the 298th Artillery Regiment (13 April 1962). Note: the insignia’s description and symbolism were revised at the time it was redesignated for the 298th Regiment.
The insignia features a shield divided into two sections of white and national flag blue, the latter being the official branch color of Infantry since 1903. Participation in the Hawaiian Rebellion of 1895 by the 298th Regiment Infantry, a unit in the organization’s lineage, is commemorated with the image of Diamond Head, site of an important engagement. The image of an Hawaiian warrior recalls King Kamehameha, founder of the Hawaiian Kingdom and one of Hawaii’s most famous historical figures.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,

An extension of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command Army School System, the 298th Regiment was constituted on 16 August 1997 as a Regiment Regional Training Institute for the Hawaii Army National Guard. While it was assigned the DUI that had been worn by the 298th Infantry Regiment and its descendant units (see above), the Regiment did not inherit that organization’s lineage.
The 299th Regiment Regional Training Institute is a Multi-Functional Training Unit with its Headquarters and 1st and 2nd Battalions stationed at Bellows Air Force Station in Waimanalo, Hawaii and its Ordnance Training Company based at the Regional Training Site Maintenance facilities in Pearl City.
“MAKAUKAU KAKOU,” the Regimental motto, translates into English as “We Are Prepared.”
