U.S. ARMY 3RD INFANTRY DIVISION ARTILLERY UNIT CREST (DUI)

Nicknamed “Marne Thunder” because its three regiments’ 75mm cannons, 155mm howitzers, 6-inch trench mortars were assigned to the “Rock of the Marne” 3rd Infantry Division during World war I, the 3rd Infantry Division Artillery provided artillery support during five World War I campaigns (though under the designation 3rd Field Artillery Brigade).

Briefly disbanded before the Second World War, the Brigade was redesignated as a DIVARTY (Division Artillery) unit before activation at Fort Lewis in Washington in October 1940. While it did not receive an Arrowhead for its landing in Tunisia as part of Operation Torch in November 1942, it would eventually take part in three assault landings (Sicily, Anzio, and Southern France) on its way to earning credit for participation in nine campaigns in the  European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Among its World War II decorations are a Presidential Unit Citation, a French Croix de Guerre with Palm, and French Croix de Guerre Fourragere.

During the Korean War, the unit fought in eight campaigns that spanned the bulk of the war and was honored with two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations and a Greek Gold Cross of Valour (Chryssoun Aristion Andrias). It received its designation as 3rd Infantry Division Artillery on 1 July 1957.

The 3rd Infantry Division Artillery DUI (Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a unit crest) features a triangle surrounded a three-word command—“Fulfill Your Mission”—to reinforce the unit’s association with the 3rd Infantry Division and its own numerical designation. Five fleur-de-lis recall the “Marne Thunder” that shook five campaigns during World War I, with a crimson field that recalls the branch color of Field Artillery (crimson).

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
