The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 3rd Sustainment Brigade employs a dragon to symbolize power and readiness. The unit's motto and nickname, "Heart of the Rock," is taken from the brigade's close affiliation with the 3rd Infantry Division, AKA "Rock of the Marne," which is represented by the blue and white diagonal stripes in the background of the insignia.
Superimposed over a palm wreath commemorating the brigade's Presidential Unit Citation are a blue sword and lightning bolt that are crossed; these symbolize the unit's mission of fast deployment to deliver support across a full spectrum of combat services. And since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the 3rd Sustainment Brigade has successfully completed that mission a half-dozen times.
Between 2003 and 2011, the Brigade was deployed three times to Iraq, beginning with the initial invasion of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In July 2012, just months before it would embark on its first deployment to Afghanistan, the Brigade was tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service between April 2010 and April 2011 for its service throughout the Iraq Joint Operations Area in support of Operations New Dawn and Iraqi Freedom. By 2020, the Brigade had six deployments under its collective belt, four in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.
As of Winter 2024, the unit is designated the 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade and is garrisoned at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively
