“PERDITOR-ORIS,” the unit motto of the 316th Cavalry Brigade, is Latin for “Destroyer” and recalls the Brigade’s lineage that goes back to 1942 and the constitution of the 8th Tank Destroyer Group, a unit that took part in four World War II campaigns in the European theater before inactivation in 1945.
This motto is inscribed in gold on a black scroll that forms the base of the 316th Cavalry Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia that was approved on 14 November 2008. Above it, an octagon—its eight sides again recalling the 8th Tank Destroyer Group—is divided in two by a diagonal lightning flash that represents the speed and mobility of the combined forces that cooperate with the Brigade. Crossed sabers in the lower half are a longstanding symbol of the Cavalry, and the panther in the upper half recalls an insignia of the 8th Tank Destroyer Group.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. The DUI is also authorized for wear on the shoulder loops of the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU) that completely replaced the old green Army Service Uniform as of 1 October 2015. (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either the AGSU or the ASU.)
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
