The 326th Engineer Battalion “oval,” officially designated as Airborne background trimming, was approved on 29 February 1988—a fitting date when you consider that this embroidered insignia, worn with Airborne and Air Assault badges, was approved on a Leap day.
Ovals are worn beneath those Skill badges, with the main portion of the badge centered on the insignia and the combination attached to Service Uniform coats and shirts and the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic. The oval and badge are considered a single item for placement, with the outer edge of the oval (and the top of the star and wreathed star of the Senior and Master Parachutist badges) used when measuring distances for positioning purposes.
Complete guidance the wear of ovals is found in
Chapter 21-32, subsection (b) and
Chapter 22-16, subsection (b) of the January 2021 edition of Department of the Army Pamphlet 670-1.
Nicknamed the “Sapper Eagles,” the unit is now designated as the 326th Brigade Engineer Battalion and is assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division and is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Originally constituted in the National Army as the 326th Engineers on 23 July 1918, the Battalion is officially credited with participation in nineteen campaigns spanning three wars and conflicts, with a strong chance that it will be recognized for taking part in one or more campaigns of the War on Terrorism.
