U.S. ARMY 328TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Currently worn by members of the 328th Brigade Support Battalion, the 328th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), sometimes called a unit crest, was originally approved for the 103rd Medical Regiment on 15 July 1931. It was redesignated for the 103rd Medical Battalion on 1 December 1942 and was redesignated for the 328th Support Battalion on 2 April 1992.

A wavy, silver chevron containing three fleurs-de-lis, a falling bomb, and a broken wheel are the focal point of the insignia. The chevron represents the Vesle River, and the five images stand for the five major engagements that the Battalion’s parent unit fought in during World War I. A broken wheel symbolizes the ten ambulances that were disabled while crossing the Andre Bridge over the river at Eismes on August 10-13, 1918; the bomb recalls a near-miss by a bomb on the night of August 12, 1918. Below the chevron is a yucca plan that recalls the service by the 103rd Medical Regiment on the Mexican Border just before World War I service.

CONSILIO AT ANIMIS, the unit motto, is Latin for “By Wisdom And Courage.”

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 328th Brigade Support Battalion, currently assigned to the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania National Army National Guard, was originally constituted 10 July 1916 in the Pennsylvania National Guard as the Sanitary Train, 7th Division. Although it was mustered into Federal service to take part in the Mexican Expedition, the unit did not earn credit for participation in that conflict, but it would make up for that shortcoming by taking part in five World War I campaigns while designated as the 103rd Sanitary Train.

As America’s entry in World War II loomed, the unit was inducted into Federal service again and was redesignated and reorganized as the 103rd Medical Battalion on 17 February 1942 and assigned to the 28th Infantry Division. The Battalion would again deploy to Europe during Word War II, earning battle honors for five campaigns, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, and a Luxembourg Croix de Guerre. Following the war, the unit would retain its designation as a Medical unit until 1 March 1992 when it was redesignated as the 328th Support Battalion.

In 2009, it was assigned to the 56th Brigade Combat Team and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Freedom, and on 7 December 2009 it was awarded another Meritorious Unit Commendation for its outstanding service between 24 February  and 3 September 2009. As of Autumn 2023, the Battalion is headquartered at Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
