Officially known as Airborne background trimming, the 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Squadron oval was approved on he background trimming was approved on 1 March 2007, six-and-a-half months after it had become an Airborne-designated unit with is assignment to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division on 16 September 2005.
Worn beneath Parachutist and/or Air Assault badges, ovals are authorized for wear on the coats of the ASGU and ASU/ASU Dress, the shirt of the Class B ASU, and green or blue Army Maternity Tunics (Female soldiers only). The 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment was constituted in the Regular Army as Company A, 3rd Armored Regiment on 13 January 1941. Redesignated as Company A, 33rd Armored Regiment, the unit would fight in five World War II campaigns, with Arrowhead devices complementing the Normandy and Rhineland streamers, and earn a Presidential Unit Citation, French Croix de Guerre, and the Belgian Fourragere 1940 (with four citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army).
For its superior service (April 2010 – August 2010) and noteworthy courage displayed in action against an armed enemy (October 2012 to May 2013), the Squadron was awarded a third Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Valorous Unit Award respectively, both earned while serving with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team. And between October 2014 and October 2015, the Squadron was chosen for a fourth MUC, this time while assigned to a Detachment from the HQ and HQ Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division.
Nicknamed “War Rakkasans,” the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment (1-33 CAV) is still assigned to 3rd BCT, 101st Airborne Division as of September 2021.
