Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally approved for the 334th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves on 10 February 1928, this Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for the 334th Regiment on 3 August 1960. Its design uses counterchanged colors, a technique of alternating two colors to suggest cooperation and teamwork. Here, the two colors are white and blue, both worn by Infantry at one time or another during the branch’s history. A diagonal bar, or bend, is also rendered in blue and white, superimposed over a fleur-de-lis and surmounted by three axes.
The fleur-de-lis refers to the unit’s service in France during World War I, where its troops were formed into cadres for training and sent forward as replacement for combat divisions on the front lines, earning the Regiment an uninscribed World War I Victory streamer. FORTES FORTUNA JUVAT, the Regimental motto, is Latin for “Fortune Favors The Brave.”
The axes are from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 84th Division, later designated as the 84th Infantry Division—the organization which the Regiment was either assigned to or an element of for almost ninety years. It was while assigned to the 84th Infantry Division that it took part in three World War II campaigns and Europe, with its 1st and 3rd Battalions being awarded a Presidential Unit Citation (embroidered ROER-RHINE RIVERS).
After being briefly designated as an Airborne unit from (1951-1952), the 334th Airborne Infantry, the unit was redesignated as the 334th Infantry in March 1952. In 1959, the entire Regiment was reorganized as an element of the 84th Division (Training), and since 1968 the Regiment’s Battalions have all been organized as elements of Training Divisions at various times, including the 84th, 95th, 98th, 100th, and 104th Divisions.
In 2010, the Regiment was reorganized to consist of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions, with the 1st an element of the 104th Training Division and the 2nd and 3rd elements of the 95th Training Division. As of Summer 2023, the Regiment's Battalions are assigned to the 3rd and 4th Brigades, 95th Training Division and the 1st Brigade, 104th Training Division.
