Worn on the maroon beret that signifies the unit’s Airborne status, the 337th Military Intelligence Battalion organizational flash was approved on 17 October 1991, the same date that the design of the Battalion’s Airborne background trimming (oval) was also given the OK.
The flash is worn centered on the stiffener of the beret. Officers wear their non-subdued insignia of grade centered on the flash (except Chaplains, who wear branch insignia) while all Enlisted personnel wear the Distinctive Unit Insignia (or Regimental Distinctive Insignia if their unit has no DUI) in the same manner. Exceptions among the Enlisted cadre include the Sergeant Major of the Army (and Soldiers serving in the Officer of the SMA) and the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, all of whom wear their unique collar insignia in lieu of a DUI or RDI.

Ovals are officially called background trimming because they are worn beneath Parachutist and Air Assault badges on Service Uniform coats (AGSU and ASU, including ASU Dress variation) and shirts, as well as by female Soldiers on the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic. Badges are centered on the oval, but the star and star-wreath portion of some Parachutist badges will necessarily project above the oval.
The oval-badge combination is considered a single item for placement and measurement purposes. Use the outermost edges of the two items when measuring distance between the oval-badge and ribbons, other badges, pockets, etc.
