The 340th Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia—better known to most soldiers as a “unit crest” or a DUI—was approved on 26 February 1967 and was subsequently updated with a revised description and symbolism on 16 September 2011.
Green and yellow, Military Police Colors, dominate in this the color palette in this insignia, with the addition of black alongside the gold to simulate the appearance of a prison. The black and gold also appears as the front of a circular belt, sign of command and power, authority, and administration. An upright key denotes logistical support. JUSTITIA ET PRUDENTIA, the unit motto, is Latin for “Justice And Foresight Or Wisdom.”
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
