U.S. ARMY 35TH INFANTRY REGIMENT (DUI)

The 35th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI for short, celebrates the Regiment's origins when it was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 35th Infantry and subsequently organized on 8-19 July 1916. The Regiment was formed with personnel from the 11th, 18th and 22nd Infantry Regiments, and are represented in the canton (small rectangular inset) on the insignia.

The 11th Infantry is symbolized by a white Maltese cross because that was the badge of the Regiment's Civil War predecessor unit (2nd Division, V Corps). Similarly, the 18th Infantry Regiment was in the 1st Division, XIV Corps, which had a red acorn as its badge. The embattled partition line of the canton symbolizes the 22nd. A cactus denotes the 35th Infantry's first assignment along the Mexican border (it was not part of the Mexican Expedition, however); the Regimental motto of “Take Arms!” is derived from the warning shouts that occurred at the start of the Battle of Ambos Nogales during the Regiment’s service there.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Assigned to the 25th Infantry Division from 1941 to 1957, the 35 Infantry Regiment fought as part of the Tropic Lightning Division in four World War campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific campaigns, including one (Northern Solomons) with an Arrowhead device signifying the unit’s planned participation in an assault landing. It was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for action at Guadalcanal, and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for helping liberate the island in 1944 – 1945. In the Korean War, the Regiment took part in all ten campaigns, with its service being recognized with a Presidential Unit Citation and three Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations.

Designated a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System in 1957, the Regiment’s two battalions (1st and 2nd) were assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Over the course of twelve campaigns, the Regiment was awarded a Valorous Unit Award and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Its most recent combat action has been in the War on Terrorism, where its 2nd Battalion has served as part of the 25th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team and earned a Valorous Unit Award and two Meritorious Unit Commendations.
