The 360th Civil Affairs Brigade beret flash and oval—the latter known technically as Airborne background trimming—were approved for wear on 23 March 2004, the same date the Brigade was authorized to amend its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) and Combat Service ID Badge (CSB) to include an “AIRBORNE” tab on top of the insignia. On 1 April 2016, approval for the wear of both the flash and oval were rescinded, followed nineteen days later by the amendment of the insignia to remove the tab from the SSI and CSIB.
Wear guidance for the flash and oval can be found in
subsections (a) and (b) of Chapter 21-32 of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1. Detailed instructions on the wear and positioning of ovals, which are worn in conjunction with the Parachutist and Air Assault badges, is found in
subsection (b), Chapter 22-16 of the same manual.
The 360th Civil Affairs Brigade is headquartered at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, the only home it has known since it was designated as the 360th Civil Affairs Area when it was constituted and activated on 6 January 1966 in the Army Reserve.
Reorganized and redesignated under its current title, the Brigade was ordered into active military service in December 1990 to provide support during the Liberation and Defense of Kuwait and the Cease-Fire campaigns of the First Gulf War, a conflict designated as “Southwest Asia” on the U.S. Army Center of Military History Web site and in the Lineage and Honors posted for individual units.
Following the launch of the War on Terrorism, the Brigade was called into active military service three times between 2003 and 2007, earning the unit battle honors for the Global War on Terrorism campaign (further campaign participation credits are yet to be determined). The Brigade’s most recent significant activity came in the spring of 2021, when it partnered with the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion during Operation Viking to carry out expeditionary deployment operations training in a joint environment involving units from the Army Reserve, Air Force, Massachusetts National Guard, and the Coast Guard.
