The 36th Sustainment Brigade received its current designation in 2008, the result of consolidation with the 36th Infantry Division Support Command which itself had been formed through consolidation with the 249th Military Police Company. The lineage of and history the various units that wound up being included in the 36th Sustainment Brigade includes eight World War II campaign streamers. And while the Brigade has yet to receive credit for campaign participation since its retooling as a Sustainment Brigade, its contributions to the Global War on Terror have been recognized. On September 3, 2010 the Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, along with Company A, was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its excellence in providing logistical services in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The citation specifically lauded the units for their “relentless pursuit of excellence” and its “contributions to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of future logistical operations.”
As of Autumn 2023, the 36th Sustainment Brigade is an active unit in the Texas Army National Guard. Its most recent overseas assignment was an 18-month deployment to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, where it conducted Logistics and Support operations in the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) Area of Responsbility (AOR). Its mission ended with a ceremony denoting the Brigade's transfer of authority to the 369th Sustainment Brigade, New York Army National Guard on 7 November 2022.

The 36th Sustainment Brigade unit crest, or Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), was approved on 28 July 2009. Like the 36th Sustainment Brigade Combat Service Identification Badge and unit patch (SSI), the focal point of the design is a phoenix, a symbol of renewal reflecting the Brigade’s new mission in Sustainment. A pole star above the phoenix represents navigation, as well as the high values that guide the unit’s members. At the bottom is the unit motto SUSTINENDUM IN PAX ET BELLUM, Latin for “Sustaining in Peace and War.”
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
