U.S. ARMY 382ND REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 382nd Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly known as a unit crest or by the initialism DUI, was originally approved for the 382nd Regiment Infantry, Organized Reserves on 20 October 1932 and was subsequently redesignated for the 382nd Regiment on 15 July 1999 with an updated description.

A blue shield reflects the unit’s origins (see below) as an Infantry organization, but it also serves to simulate a sky when combined with the snow-capped peak and rolling green hills at the base of the shield, imagery alluding to the Regiment’s organization in Oregon following World  War I. “We Lead” is the Regimental motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Formed in September 1918 in the National Army as the 382nd Infantry, the Regiment was assigned to the 96th Division (designated as the 96th Infantry Division after June 1942. As with nearly all other Infantry Regiments formed at that time, the unit was demobilized following the end of the war but was quickly reconstituted in the Organized Reserves with the same designation and assigned to the same organization as before, the 96th Infantry Division.

It would serve with the 96th ID in two campaigns in the Pacific Theater, Leyte and Ryukyus, earning an Arrowhead device for taking part in an Assault landing during the Leyte action. Its outstanding service was also recognized with a Presidential Unit Citation (also for action during the Leyte campaign) and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. After a brief inactivation (11 months) it was reactivated on 10 January 1947 in the Organized Reserve (which became the Army Reserve) and then inactivated on 1 March 1952; it was relieved from assignment to the 96th Infantry Division at the same time.

Forty-seven years later, the unit was redesignated as the 382nd Regiment, reorganized to comprise three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd) that were all elements of the 75th Division (Training Support). When the process of transforming the 75th Division into the 75th Innovation Command began, the two Battalions still in the Army Reserve (1st and 2nd) were reassigned to Training Commands or to organizations reporting to Training Commands, while the 3rd Battalion served as a Support unit assigned to the 166th Aviation Brigade.

As of Autumn 2023, both the 1st and 2nd Battalions are allotted to the Army Reserve and serving as Logistics Support training units, with the 1st Battalion assigned to the 5th Combined Arms Training Brigade, 85th Support Command and 2nd Battalion assigned to the 120th Multi-Functional Training Brigade, also reporting to the 85th Support Command. It is unclear whether the 3rd Battalion remains an active unit.
