U.S. ARMY 383RD MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 383rd Military Intelligence Battalion was first constituted in the Organized Reserve Cops as HQ, 383rd Military Intelligence Battalion on 8 February 1951 and was activated on 1 March 1951 at Newark, New Jersey. Less than two years later, it was inactivated on 28 February 1953 while still headquartered at Newark and remained inactive for nearly 45 years. It was redesignated as HQ and HQ and Service Company, 383rd Military Intelligence Battalion on 28 March 1996.

It has long since been transferred to the United States Army Reserve Military Readiness Command, where it is assigned to the 505th Military Intelligence Brigade and is headquartered at Belton, Missouri.

Approved for wear on 10 September 1997, the 383rd Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia features a distinctive rectangular shield rendered in silver gray with oriental blue highlights, official branch colors of the Military Intelligence Corps. Inside the shield is a griffin rampant, a mythical creature renowned for its courage and savvy that symbolizes the expertise and resourcefulness of the Battalion’s personnel, their readiness and will for military action reflected in the sword held by the griffin. A double orle suggests sound waves and is a visual reference to the unit’s motto/admonition, “Speak And Be Heard,” while simultaneously evoking the duplicity necessary to carry out the Intelligence mission successfully. The scarlet griffin and banner, blue orle, and silver (white) background incorporate the national colors and represent presence.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
