Since it was originally constituted in the Indiana National Guard on 3 June 1916 as Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Infantry, the history of the unit known as the 38th Sustainment Brigade since September 2008 has been closely linked with the 38th Infantry Division: It served as part of that division in both World Wars, and even wore the Division’s Distinctive Unit Insignia for a few months after it had been designated a separate Brigade on 1 September 2008 (this insignias was approved for wear on 10 December 2008).
Thus it’s no surprise that the design of the 38th Sustainment Brigade Shoulder Sleeve insignia, or unit patch, is inspired in part by the that of the 38th Infantry Division, most notably in is overall shape and the use of red and blue. In the shield’s interior, a scimitar denotes the Brigade’s deployment in the Persian Gulf to provide support for Operation Iraqi Freedom. A trio of gold bars represents service in three wars (both World Wars and the Global War on Terror). Nineteen stars reflect Indiana’s status as the 19th state, and of course red, white, and blue are our national Colors.
