U.S. ARMY 39TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 39th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 256 May 1955. The shield portion of the insignia is the coat of arms for the 39th Engineer Combat Regiment, but with a different border; this is to note the descent of the Battalion from the 2nd Battalion of that Regiment. The ox is Paul Bunyan's Babe, whose footprints are said to have created Minnesota's 10,000 lakes and thus symbolizes the powerful capabilities of the Battalion. A star on the ox's forehead is an allusion to Texas, the state where the Battalion was activated in 1942. The motto "Fight, Build, And Destroy," is a pithy but otherwise accurate description of the Battalion's basic functions.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Nicknamed “Blue Bulls,” the 39th Engineer Battalion was originally constituted as the 2nd Battalion, 39th Engineers in the Regular Army on 15 July 1940 but was not activated until August 1942. Redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 39th Engineer Combat Regiment, the unit would take part in a half-dozen World War II campaigns and earn a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in Italy. Following the war, the unit was briefly redesignated as the 643rd Engineer Combat Regiment (March 1945 – April 1947) before becoming the 39th Engineer combat Battalion and then receiving its current designation as the 39th Engineer Battalion on 23 November 1954.

During the Vietnam War, the Battalion participated in an astonishing fourteen campaigns (there were seventeen in all) and was the recipient of two Meritorious Unit Commendations and a pair of Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medals, First Class. Inactivated on 1 September 1992, the Battalion was concurrently reactivated assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky on 17 April 2015. Since then, a detachment of the Battalion has been awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation (for service between May 2016 and January 2017), and in 2018 it became the first unit to have an enlisted Female earn the Sapper Tab when then Sergeant Hailey Falk completed the Sapper Leader Course.
