U.S. ARMY 392ND SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI) of the 392nd Signal Battalion is flush with tones of orange, the official branch color of the Signal Corps, augmented by gold to signify honor and high achievement. In the center, black is juxtaposed with the gold to conjure the contrast between night and day, embodying the round-the-clock, 24/7 nature of the Signal Corps mission.

A fess of blue with three gold fleurs-de-li recall the unit’s World War II campaigns in Normandy, Ardennes-Alsace, and Northern France; the lion memorializes the massive and costly Central Europe campaign. The Lion also serves as an emblem of courage and strength, with the lightning bolt it grips serving as a reminder of the blinding speed of modern electronic communications (as well as auxiliary technology) and the need for ever-faster responses in order to maximize information and data acquired through utilizing that technology. “We Serve To Honor” is the motto of the battalion.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 392nd Signal Battalion was originally constituted in the Army of the United States as the 392nd Signal Company on 23 July 1942. Redesignated as the 392nd Signal Company, Air Force in January 1944 before being reorganized and redesignated as the 1709th Signal Service Battalion, the unit would take part in four campaigns in Europe before being inactivated on 12 November 1945.

Almost nine years passed before the unit was activated on 1 May 1954 and then less than two before it was inactivated on 1 February, both actions occurring at New York, New York. The Battalion would become the HQ and HQ Detachment, 392nd Signal Battalion on 8 August 1956 at Concord, New Hampshire, but inactivation came in February 1963. This time, close to twenty-eight years would elapse before the Battalion was activated on 16 October 1995 at West Hazelton, Pennsylvania.

Ten years later to the day, the organization was given its current designation—HQ and HQ Company, 392nd Signal Battalion—and its organic elements were concurrently constituted and activated. In November 2006, the Battalion’s location shifted to its current location of Baltimore. As of Autumn 2023, it is referred to as the 392nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion and is assigned to the 359th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade.
