Translated “Keep Up The Fight,” the Latin motto “PERGITE PROELIUM” found at the base of the Distinctive Unit Insignia of Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division aptly describes the brief history of the unit. Forged from scratch to prosecute the War on Terrorism on 16 September 2004, the Battalion deployed to combat four times over a period of less than ten years—and each time earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation for their exemplary service supporting the troops on the front lines of battle.
On 25 April 2014, the Battalion cased its colors during a formal inactivation ceremony for the 4th Brigade Combat Team held at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; also inactivated that day were the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment; 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment; and the 801st Brigade Support Battalion.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, of the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 101st Airborne Division features an with talons extended to represent an air assault; a crossed sword and key form a saltire symbolizing the Battalion’s Military Intelligence assets (key) and the entire unit’s warrior ethos. The saltire forms the top of a green chevron; the chevron is a heraldic image for support that is often associated with Engineer units, while green is the color of the Military Police. A lightning flash entering the field at the top left denotes Signal Corps functions, and the scarlet field evokes courage and sacrifice (scarlet is also an Engineer color).
