U.S. ARMY SPECIAL TROOPS BATTALION, 4TH BCT, 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Better known as a unit crest or a DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division reflects the diversity of its component units and its unique makeup and mission. A lion sejant in the center of a black disc symbolizes courage and valour displayed in fulfilling the unit’s support role, which is summed up in the Latin motto “DUCO UNDIQUE,” or “Influence Everywhere.” In the disc’s white border are five colored bars, each a branch color of a type of unit in the Battalion: Orange (Signal Corps), Scarlet (Engineer), Green (Military Police), and Oriental Blue (Military Intelligence). At the top of the circle is a bar in teal blue, the color used for branch immaterial units like a Special Troops Battalion.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.  Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Headquarter and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade, 2th Infantry Division was constituted and activated on 6 December 1959 at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, but a little over a year later it was inactivated on 15 December 1970. Nearly 35 years later, its Headquarters Company was redesignated as Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division—also referred to as 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 25th Infantry Division—while its Headquarters was made the HQ of the 4th Brigade Combat Team. Both the Special Troops Battalion and the Brigade Combat Team were activated on 16 September 2005 at Fort Richardson in Alaska.

As part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), nicknamed “Spartans,” the Battalion was the recipient of two Meritorious Unit Commendations, one for its 2006 deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and another for its service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2009 – 2010; it was also recognized with a Valorous Unit Award.

On 17 October 2014, the Special Troops Battalion, 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division (4-25 STB) was formally inactivated, followed by the immediate activation of 6th Brigade Engineer Battalion to fulfill many of the duties that had been part of the STB mission.
