A unit in the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade is a modular organization created to provide logistics power forward to all elements of the expeditionary Army, enabling Combatant Commanders by proving response logistics capability and materiel readiness. It comprises five Direct Reporting Units in the form of two Army Field Support Battalions (one each in Hawaii and Alaska) and three Logistics Readiness Centers (two in Alaska, one in Hawaii).
Approved on 11 December 2006, the 402nd Support Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI, also called a unit patch, employs a design extremely similar to that of the 401st Army Field Support Brigade’s unit patch, which was approved on the same day. A shield divided into three partitions—red, white, and blue in the color version of the insignia—are modified from the Army Materiel Command Shoulder Sleeve Insignia; their inclusion here denotes the Brigade’s adoption of the AMC’s mission of support and flow of materiel to personnel. The tip of the inverted chevron (base of top partition) points to the Brigade as the single point of entry to Army Materiel Command from the field. An upright sword connotes support for the Soldiers, and three stars in the upper partition are taken from the flag of Iraq, an allusion to the Brigade’s theater of operations.
This insignia was cancelled by Headquarters, Department of the Army on 21 February 2010.
