Officially called a Distinctive Unit Insignia or a DUI, the 403rd Support Brigade unit crest was approved with an effective date of 16 October 2008. The overall shape of the insignia is a taeguk, a symbol similar to the yin-yang design, that is used in Army heraldry to refer to service in Korea. In the center is a red structure called a Torii Gate that is associated with Japan. Behind the gate is a rising sun, another reference to the Far East region where the unit was activated.
Gold is a symbol of excellence and used throughout the insignia to denote high achievement and excellence, while the combination of black and gold in the disc containing the unit motto “Maintaining The Warriors” recalls the colors of the Army logo. Additionally, the contrast between black and gold recalls the difference between night and day to underscore the round-the-clock mission of the Brigade.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
