Approved on 16 October 2008 for the 404th Support Brigade, the 404th Army Field Support Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (often called “unit crest”) incorporates the red, white, and blue partitions found in the Brigade’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) and in many Field Support Brigade insignias. The design is based upon the SSI of Army Materiel Command, the unit’s parent command.
The white portion is shaped to resemble Mount Rainier, reflecting the Brigade’s mission of providing logistical support to all units in the Far West and Pacific Northwest; it also alludes to the Brigade’s Headquarters at Fort Lewis, a little over 30 miles northwest of the famous peak. The white portion also forms an inverted chevron tipped with an arrow point to indicate the Brigade is the sole point of entry to Army Materiel Command from the field.
Two lightning bolts stand for the 25th Infantry Division, nicknamed “Tropic Lightning” and whose insignia also features a lightning bolt, while the Polaris (North Star) alludes to the Brigade’s units stationed in Alaska. The North Star also represents guidance and leadership an the Brigade always staying focused on their mission. “SUSTINERE AD VICTURUS” is the Latin motto that translates in English as “Sustain To Win,” emphasizing the unit’s mission to aid in readying the units within their area of responsibility for any and all contingency missions.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
