The 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, is crafted almost entirely in cobalt blue and golden yellow, the official colors of the unit’s branch when it was originally constituted in May 1990 as the 404th Chemical Brigade.
Further acknowledgement of its origins can be seen in the yellow-trimmed blue hexagon between two dragons rampant; the hexagon is a benzene ring and is used for the Chemical Corps branch insignia, while dragons are commonly used for Chemical Corps heraldry as a symbol of steadfast defense. Their placement as “bookends” to the benzene ring suggest the unit’s new Support function and reinforces the motto, “Dragons In Support.”
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
