The 407th Brigade Support Battalion beret flash and background trimming, or oval, have been worn since 31 June 1992 and the unit was designated as the 407th Supply and Transport Battalion, Airborne; it would become the 407th Forward Support Battalion in 1993 and later be given its current designation reflecting its support role for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
Also called an organizational flash, this shield-shaped insignia is worn centered on the stiffener of one of four colored berets designating specific unit types; this one is worn on the maroon beret to signify its status as an Airborne unit.
As a general rule, NCOs and Junior Enlisted Soldiers wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) centered on the beret stiffener; personnel in units not authorized a DUI wear their Regimental Distinctive Insignia. Officers (except Chaplains) wear their non-subdued insignia of grade on the beret in the same fashion. Enlisted personnel can click here http://www.uniforms-4u.com/p-army-407-support-battalion-unit-crest-9057.aspx if they need to add the 407th Brigade Support Battalion to their shopping carts or would like to read more about the Brigade’s lineage, history, and military decorations and honors. Two exceptions to this wear guidance for Enlisted personnel are found in
paragraph 4–10(e) of DA PAM 670-1.
The oval is placed beneath a Parachutist or Air Assault Badge, with the main portion of the badge centered on the oval (the star and star-and-wreath at the top of the Senior and Master Parachutist Badgers unavoidably projects above the oval). They are considered a single item when worn together; when measuring, use the outermost edge of the combo regardless if it’s on the oval or on the badge. The oval-and-badge combination is approved for wear by all personnel on Service Uniform coats (AGSU and ASU, including dress variation) and shirts and by female Soldiers on the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic.
As of June 2021, the 407th BSB is assigned to the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
