U.S. ARMY 412TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The 412th Civil Affairs Battalion organizational flash (also called a beret flash because of its placement) and Airborne background trimming (oval) were both approved on 25 October 2007.

An embroidered, shield-shaped insignia with a semi-circular bottom, the flash is worn centered on the stiffener of the maroon beret authorized for personnel in Airborne-designated units, with Officers wearing their rank insignia and Enlisted personnel wearing the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) centered on the flash. Flashes are worn by all Battalion personnel regardless of their individual Airborne or Airborne-related qualifications.

This is not the case with ovals, which are authorized only for Battalion members who have earned a Parachutist or Air Assault badge. the main portion of the badge (excluding the star and wreath on some Parachutist badges) is centered on the oval before the combination is worn on the AGSU and ASU coats, Class B AGSU shirt, and blue or green Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only). Instructions on placement of the oval-badge combination are found subsection (b), Chapter 22-16 of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1.

The 412th Civil Affairs Battalion began its service life on 17 February 1949 when it was constituted in the Organized Reserve Corps as the 412th Military Government Company and activated on 2 March 1949. It would undergo four redesignations and two reorganizations before being given its current designation of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 412th Civil Affairs Battalion on 16 September 1992. But the redesignation did not activate the unit, which had been inactivated since January 1968; that would not end until 16 September 2002 when it was activated at Whitehall, Ohio.

Since that time, the Battalion has been deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism on several occasions. While the unit as a whole has not received a military decorations, individual components (Detachments from Companies A, B, and D) have been tapped for a total of four Meritorious Unit Commendations for service between December 2003 and April 2007.

As of 2021, the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion and is still headquartered at Whitehall, It is assigned to the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade. 352nd Civil Affairs Command, U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command
