U.S. ARMY 420TH CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Approved on 27 March 2000, the 420th Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more familiarly known as a unit crest, features a benzene ring—adapted from the insignia of branch of the United States Army Chemical Corps—cast in light blue as a reference to the First Washington United States Volunteer Infantry, Yakima’s first organized militia. The golden yellow used for the wavy scroll containing the unit motto “Passage Assured” is one of the Chemical Corps’ branch colors.

Dragons are a common image found on the insignias of Chemical Corps units, signifying both destructive power and watchfulness. Here the dragon is circling above a mountain that symbolizes Mount Rainier, a prominent Washington landmark that highlights the unit’s location, as an emblem of vigilance. Taken together, the dragon and mountain represent the strength and power of the unit.

Assigned to the 96th Troop Command, the 420th Chemical Battalion is a Washington Army National Guard unit headquartered at Yakima, Washington. In addition to its HQ and HQ Detachment, it comprises two Chemical Companies and a Chemical Detachment and two Transportation Companies.
