Simultaneously organized and Federally recognized on 1 September 2005 in the Michigan Army National Guard, the HQ and HQ Company, 46th Military Police Command (MPC) was activated the following year at Lansing. It was subsequently ordered into active Federal Service in 2010. The Command is part of U.S. Army North’s Task Force 46, with an element of the 46th MP serving as the Headquarters for Task Force 46; the Task Force provides command and control of any military support for civilian responders managing catastrophic CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) events. However, the unit may be activated for Federal service at any time in keeping with its motto of “Securing Freedom Worldwide.”
The 46th Military Police Command Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved for wear on 21 November 2006. Employing the Military Police branch colors of green and yellow, the insignia features a key in the middle with double wards that are shaped like the Roman numerals “IV” and “VI” to indicate the unit’s numerical designation. The key is a symbol of the provision of security. The two lines in the middle form a heraldic device called a double cottise with a total of four diagonal lines; added to the six sides of the hexagon, they also form the unit’s numerical designation of 46
