The 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a unit crest or a DUI, was approved with an effective date of 16 September 2004. Purple, primary branch color for Civil Affairs units, is used extensively throughout the insignia, which might well be one of the most colorful DUIs ever produced. In its center is a phoenix in purple with gold trimmed wings (gold is the color of honor and high achievement)l rising from flames, a symbol of rebirth that parallels the unit’s mission to establish order and hope from chaos. A gridlined demi-globe denotes the unit’s worldwide missions, while the yellow and red rays and the star are adapted from the state flag of Arizona. A pair of saguaro cactus underscore the Southwest region, home base of the Battalion. “Hope Through Deeds” is the unit motto.
Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion was originally constituted as the 92nd HQ and HQ Detachment, Military Government Group on 25 August 1945 in the Army of the United States and activated at the Presidio of Monterey, California. It was redesignated as the 92nd Military Government, HQ and HQ Company on 4 January 1946 but was subsequently inactivated just over six months later in Japan.
In late March 1955, the unit was again redesignated, this time being given its current numerical designation as the 492nd Military Government Company as it was concurrently allotted to the Army Reserve before being activated three days later on the last day of the month. It would finally be reorganized and redesignated as a Civil Affairs unit in May 1957 when it became the 492nd Civil Affairs and Military Government Company and then just the 492nd Civil Affairs Company in January 1960. Inactive for a nearly thirty-year period starting in 1974, on 16 September 2004—similar to the phoenix in its insignia—the unit rose from the “ashes” of inactivation and was redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion.
The Battalion and/or elements of it have received several decorations in recognition of its outstanding service in its support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Most notable among them are a pair of Valorous Unit Awards, one issued in April 2008 to a Battalion Detachment for service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom between July and September 2005 and a second one announced in May 2009 for Company A’s service between February and May 2007 while attached to the HQ and HQ Troop, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment.
As of Summer 2023, the Battalion is assigned to the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade, 351st Civil Affairs Command and is headquartered at Buckeye, Arizona.
