In contrast to the almost medieval appearance of the 5th Signal Command’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI), or unit patch, the design of its unit crest—officially called a Distinctive Unit Insignia or a DUI—is thoroughly modern in the most classical meaning of the word. Five lightning flashes superimposed over a disc with smaller, circular inset lines symbolize both the speed of modern communications and the worldwide scope of the unit’s mission. They also are a reference to the numerical designation of the unit. The nested circles and inward-point lightning bolts mimic the look of a target with arrows indicating a bull’s-eye. Vertically bookending the crest is the unit's motto, "Professional Communications."
Officially referred to as a Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), the unit crest of the 5th Signal Command was approved on 13 April 1983.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."Related Items
