Approved on 16 September 2015, the 505th Military Intelligence Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, features an irregularly shaped shield with an oriental blue field and a golden yellow border, key, pentacle, flash, and sword, all underneath a superimposed black chess knight. The chess knight is a frequently used image in Military Intelligence heraldry and insignias because of the piece’s unique move properties and its ability to “jump over” both friendly and opposing pieces.
The upright sword is a sign of military preparedness and, because of its key-shaped handle and hilt, also refers to control. The key is symbolic of security and support viz a viz the Quartermaster branch insignia. A lightning flash denotes both quick response time and rapid transmission speeds, and the overall outline of the patch is essentially identical to that used for the Military Intelligence Readiness Command.
