The 505th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade was originally formed as HQ and HQ Detachment, 3146th Signal Service Group and activated 29 Jul 1944 in France. Over the next year, it would earn official credit for participation in three campaigns—Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe—before its inactivation on 10 July 1946 in Germany.
Several inactivations, redesignations, and activations of the unit occurred between 1946 and 23 November 1953, when it was reorganized and redesignated the 505th Signal Group. It would operate for a dozen years under this designation until it was again inactivated on 10 September 1965 in Germany. It would remain in stasis until February 2009, when it was withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Army Reserve and concurrently redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, 505th Signal Brigade. More than two years would elapse before it was activated at Las Vegas, Nevada, on 16 September 2011.
