The Distinctive Unit Insignia (better known as a unit crest or DUI) worn today by members of the 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was originally designated for the 529th Support Battalion. “Forward And Light,” the unit motto displayed on the insignia, is a reference to its service as Forward Support Battalion during the 1990s. The 529th CSSB is also referred to as Task Force Cavalier, a reference to the mascot of the University of Virginia (“Cavaliers”).
A unit in the Virginia Army National Guard assigned to the 329th Regional Support Group, the 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion has been deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. For its ten-month stretch of service between May 2010 and March 2011 in Afghanistan, the Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation, primarily for providing the first Sustainment operations for Regional Command-West during the buildup of Shindand Air Base. And in late 2018, a detachment from the Battalion was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, where it assumed responsibility of its assigned battlefield sustainment operations on 1 January 2019, followed by a transfer of authority ceremony on 7 January 2019 at Camp Taji, Iraq. Earlier in 2018, the Battalion sent Soldiers to North Carolina to assist in recovery efforts following widespread flooding caused by Hurricane Florence.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
