The organizational flash of the 56th Troop Command is worn on the maroon beret the Army officially authorized for wear by personnel in Airborne units beginning in 1981. Regulations call for Officers (except Chaplains) to wear their insignia of rank centered on the flash and for all Enlisted personnel to wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia; because there is no DUI approved for the 56th Troop Command, they instead wear the Rhode Island ARNG Joint Force DUI (link below).
Technically designated as Airborne background trimming, the oval is worn beneath any earned Parachutist or Air Assault badges, with the badge centered on the oval before being placed on the AGSU and ASU coats, Class B AGSU shirt, and Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only).
Full guidance on the wear of flashes and ovals is found in the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1
Chapter 21-32, subsections (a) and (b), “Distinctive items authorized for other than infantry personnel.” Instructions on the wear and positioning of Parachutist and Air Assault badges and ovals is found in the same pamphlet in
Chapter 22-16 (b), “Combat and special skill badges and tabs.”
