A major command of the Georgia Army National Guard, the 560th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade was organized as the first of its kind in the Army National Guard. It was activated in October 2007 and was based at Cummings Regional Readiness Command, where its Headquarters and Headquarters Company exercised command and control over a Military Intelligence Battalion, a squadron of Cavalry, a Quartermaster Company, a Brigade Support Company, and a Signal Company. It took part in numerous exercises and contributed to join and Coalition task forces before its inactivated in June 2016.
The 560th Battlefield Survillance Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved for wear by the Brigade on 1 September 2009, and it features many of the same graphical elements seen on the Brigade’s unit patch (viewable here). Its shape is that of a Greek spearhead, the offensive weapon of history’s first elite warriors, the Spartans. This not only complements the Distinctive Unit Insignia’s shield shape, but also identifies the Brigade as the “tip of the spear” in the fight on the battlefield, reinforcing the unit motto of “To The Point.”
The light-blue half of the arrowhead stands for the Infantry; the black represents the hidden, unknown aspects of future battlespaces. A lightning bolt about to strike suggests the Brigade’s mission of empowering Commanders at all levels with heightened awareness and understanding of the total battle. Finally, the dagger and its crisp point is a symbol of the technical and tactical expertise held by all Soldiers throughout the Brigade.
